I had a remarkable day. Under a warm sun hinting of spring, surrounded by trees budding with potential, someone reminded me that life is a roller coaster; nothing is certain despite all the preparation in the world, except what we can do right now. Preparation has it’s value; but when one has a vision of what they desire, one must actually begin to bring it into reality if they ever wish to reach their dream. Nothing grows or changes without the first step, and I see so much pain and dysfunction in the way many of us are living now; but I also firmly believe that we have the power to create a better life. And I want to begin sharing this adventure of finding the alternatives with you, wherever it takes me.

Life is a roller coaster; it can throw us for a loop, and for all the thrilling highs we are often then sent plunging to the depths. Especially in recent years, we have seen increasingly that things are indeed always ending; but we always have the power to make new choices, and create new beginnings. That drop from a height builds momentum. As a chapter of my life closes, I have reflected on how many other stories I have heard; how many of us struggle through parts of our lives that feel broken? As I begin a new chapter, in a new place, bursting with life and potential under the spring sun, I dream of what could be different. I’ve been drawn to the alternative in many of it’s forms all my life; and I can no longer hesitate to embrace it.

As mainstream society fails to deliver on its promises, I consider what better choices we can make. Alternatives in fashion to the wasteful disposable textile culture; I love learning to sew, create, and care for my clothing. Alternatives to our increasingly monolithic food and health systems; I’m a classically trained Herbalist who’s working on bettering her own diet and health. Even my aesthetic and music tastes are alternative; you’ll find me celebrating the darker side of life at Goth, Industrial, and Metal shows. This is just the tip of the iceberg; we always have the option to find alternatives with which to build to a new life, each in ways that suit us best. And if we choose to do this together, we can build a world that fits each of us; rather than a world each of us tries to fit into.

I had a delightful day. I walked into all of the local fabric shops to explore; everyone had a smile, and every space brimmed with inspiration. What other community is there waiting to be discovered? I’ve been cooking new meals; I’m learning to take better care of myself, and escape the diet that is offered as the norm in this country. How will I be caring for myself next year? Or even next month? I had a thrilling conversation, which left me inspired to begin sharing my adventure now; not waiting until I make something perfect. Just how much can we change in a single day, when we believe and choose to do so?

I want to share this journey with you, I want my successes and failures out there for others to see; because I believe we all have something to offer each other, and I hope you can learn from my experiences and enjoy the process with me. Because if we’re not enjoying the alternatives we choose to build towards, what kind of future are we creating? I dream of a world where we can explore all the creative ways to take care of ourselves and each other, and live more in touch with nature; a world where we are all free to explore our vast, individual, untapped potential. It all begins with a choice; as I choose to pursue the life I dream of, I hope I can help inspire you to find your own alternatives, chase your own dreams.

Life is never certain; I have no idea where this blog could go. But that delights me; this world is full of so much to learn, and this is the beginning of a whole new chapter. Among all of this uncertainty, something I know is that I am grateful to you for being here with me on this first step. Thank you. I’m excited to see where this adventure of a life takes me, and so very happy to have you along for the ride. I’m amazed at what I’ve gotten an opportunity to begin here, and it leaves me wondering what will happen when we all start to make new choices?
